Background knowledge of German:

German belongs to the West Germanic, a Germanic Branch of the Indo-European language family. The formation of the standard German can be traced back to the translation of the Bible by Martin Luther. German, the mother tongue of over 100 million people, was initially used in Germany, Austria, the Northern Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Südtirol of Italy, a small part of Belgian, part of Poland and Alsace. In addition, there are still a certain number of people speaking German in some ex-colonies of Germany such as Namibia and some German-speaking ethnic groups remain in some East European countries.

History:

The word Deutsch first appeared in the Medieval. Its etyma originates from “thioda” (adjective form: thiodisk) in Germanic, indicating that it was a language used by ordinary people. At that time, Frankish of high classes usually spoke Latin and later French. Then, German was not a unified language but a combination of many dialects.

In the Medieval, dukes were setting up their own regimes respectively in Germany and transportation was poor, resulting in the huge differences among German dialects during their development. Although there was an intention of creating a common language, it was confined to some region and was taken advantage of by certain classes. For example, Plattduutsch of the Northern Germany became the business language along the seaboard of North Sea and Baltic Sea when the Hanseatic League was flourishing the most fully.

Martin Luther translated the Bible into German, greatly contributing to the unification of German. Religious revolution helped the prevalence of the German dialect used in Luther’s translation, which was the basis of the standard German later.

In 1781, John Christopher Adlon published the first German dictionary. From 1852, Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm began to compile their most extensive German dictionary, which was't finished until 1960. In 1880, Konrad Duden published his Vollständiges Orthographisches Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache. After little modification, this dictionary became the only formal version of standard German with its rules receiving further revision in 1998 in which some very irregular grammars were improved and some other rules were simplified. Besides, some writing methods, populated among the ordinary people but regarded wrong, were finally accepted. After the revision, the old writing system was considered as “obsolete but not wrong”.
