Background knowledge of Korean:
Korean is mainly used in South Korea and the
Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as well as among the
Korean-Chinese
in China with a total of 70 million around the world. The Korean
language belongs to the Altai language family. The Korean writing system
includes Hangul, the Alphabetical writing system and Hanja, the Chinese
writing system. Half of the Korean words root in Chinese while the
Korean grammar is most similar to the Korean one. It is still unsure
which language family Korean belongs to. For hundreds of years, the
Korean language has been a mixture of Chinese characters and Korean
character. Although many characters were borrowed form Chinese, Korean
has no ?? relation with Chinese. The North Korea abandoned Chinese
characters after World War
Ⅱ while the South Korea has
been gradually replacing Chinese characters with Korean ones.
The Korean letters, created in
1443 to 1446, is the only letter system with far-eastern
characteristics. Each of the 25 letters represents a consonant or a
vowel, which is different from that of Korean and Chinese with the
former standing for syllable while the latter meaning. However, the main
difference from other language characters is that, in the Korean
language, letters with the same syllable form a group. For example,
“nun” stands for eyes in Korean as “mul” water. “nunmul”, their
combination means “tear” or “many tears”.
